In this HUB we have often discussed the strategic and breakthrough  role that the integrated reporting process, which is speeding ahead in every country of the world, can have for our profession (as well as others, like accounting, auditing, financial, social and environmental analysis).

Today September 12, the IIRC, where the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management plays a relevant role, has issued for comments and consultation by key stakeholders, a document that outlines a global platform for integrated reporting.

Please take a good look at this document and comment here  so that we may be able to prepare a thorough commente and suggestion from the public relations profession.

Simone Cappati – The Stockholm Accords for PR and Communication

Simone Cappati, an Italian student from IULM University, guided by Prof. Stefania Romenti and Prof. Emanuele Invernizzi, has just completed and discussed with maximum votes (110 cum laude) his thesis in the english language on The Stockholm Accords for Pr and Communication: the project and its Implementations in Italy.

It is a thorough and well searched paper that is excellent reading. Here it is.

Please note that the Stockholm Accords webinars previously scheduled for June 15^th and 16^th, 2011 will be postponed.

 The Global Alliance is now preparing a new process to engage the international public relations and communication management community on the value our profession brings to society as we work toward the next World Public Relations Forum in Melbourne, Australia, in November 2012.

 At the rescheduled webinar we will not only discuss the impact of the Stockholm Accords, but also seek guidance from GA members and senior professionals on the 2011/2012 process.

In a few weeks the Central European Journal of Communication will publish a very recent article from James Grunig by the title ‘

Public Relations and Strategic Management:

Institutionalizing Organization-Public Relationships in Contemporary Society

at the beginning of this article Grunig writes:

” …. In June 2010, the Global Alliance for Public Relations and Communication Management, an association of national public relations associations, issued a set of principles for public relations professionals to “administer on a sustained basis and to affirm throughout the profession, as well as to management and other relevant stakeholder groups” (p. 1). These Stockholm Accords resulted from the “collaborative effort of leaders of the global public relations profession from 32 countries” (p. 1). The Stockholm Accords affirm that public relations should play a major role in organizational governance and management as well as in communication programs for internal and external publics and that its value comes from increasing the organization’s sustainability “across the economic, social, and environmental ‘triple bottom line’” (p. 2)…..”

And a few lines later he adds:

” (the accords) argued that contemporary society requires public relations professionals who can deal with global interactions, relationships, and responsibilities and who can manage relationships among organizations and stakeholders in a global, digitalized world where issues and crises related to poor organizational governance have become commonplace. However, if one were to ask journalists or people in general if they believe the public relations profession delivers such value to society, most would express surprise that such a description is what public relations is all about. Likewise, if one also were to monitor the typical discussions among public relations practitioners in trade media and online discussions, he or she would find much more talk about messaging, publicity, media relations, media monitoring, and marketing support than about the roles and responsibilities of public relations in organizational governance. In the minds of most people, public relations has become institutionalized as a messaging activity whose purpose is to make organizations look good in the media or to sell products, usually through devious means, rather than as a management activity that improves relationships among stakeholders and organizations…..”

The Stockholm Accords Webinars announced in June

On the first anniversary of “The Stockholm Accords” – the first global articulation of, and advocacy for, the value of Public Relations in organizational success – Public Relations leaders around the world will join in a June 15 global webinar advancing the impact of the “Accords.”

The “Accords” present the significant value of professional internal and external communication, and the necessity of their alignment, for an organization’s successful governance, management and sustainability.

 It has been a remarkable year for this initiative. Adopted at The Global Alliance Stockholm 2010 World Public Relations Forum, the “Accords” have already generated 100 events, programs, research and discussion in 25 countries. And momentum is growing for a new two-year commitment for “Accords” promotion to be adopted at the GA 2012 World Public Relations Forum in Melbourne, Australia.

 We invite you to actively participate in an online webinars that will take place on Wednesday, June 15 and Thursday, June 16.

 In order to attend the seminar, please follow these steps:

John  Paluszek stepped down from the Chair of the Global Alliance this week in Lisbon at the Annual General Meeting. Dan Tisch, who was Chair Elect, takes the helm of the Association. Anne Gregory is Chair Elect and Catherine Arrow is Secretary.

All four were instrumental to the thinking, development and implementation of the Stockholm Accords.

Amongst the main decisions taken at Lisbon’s AGM was to hold two consecutive global webinars (one for the Western and one for the Eastern hemisphere) on June 15 and 16, the first anniversary since their approval in Stockholm,  to discuss with global leaders the status of the Accords.

Many readers of the HUB will certainly be receiving an email invitati0n to participate, but not necessarily all will be in our files.
